Some are born luckier than others, even in the world of The Hunger Games, and Haymitch Abernathy has been dealt a bad hand. Decades before becoming Katniss Everdeen’s mentor, he was chosen as a tribute for the 50th Hunger Games on Reaping Day, which not only coincides with his birthday, but also marks the Second Quarter Quell that would come to form a defining chapter in his story.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will rewind the clock and take viewers on this journey, set 24 years before the first film. Based on Suzanne Collins’ novel, it follows 16-year-old Haymitch (Joseph Zada) in the special, glorified edition of the tournament that enlists twice as many participants in a fight to the death. The film additionally serves as a sequel to 2023’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, and is set to feature younger versions of familiar characters, including Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket (originally played by Elizabeth Banks), Ralph Fiennes as President Snow (Donald Sutherland), Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci), Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman), and Maya Hawke as Wiress (Amanda Plummer).
Francis Lawrence, who has directed every theatrical release since 2012’s Catching Fire, is back at the helm, while Billy Ray penned the screenplay. Glenn Close, Mckenna Grace, Billy Porter, Ben Wang, Whitney Peak and Iris Apatow are among the additional cast, with Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson confirmed to reprise their roles as Katniss and Peeta Mellark, respectively.
