The wait for the Mogwai’s highly anticipated return has gotten a bit longer. Warner Bros.’s upcoming untitled Gremlins sequel, tentatively referred to as Gremlins 3, will now open on 6 October 2028, back from its planned 19 November 2027 release.
The announcement was accompanied by a teaser showing one of the adorable creatures peeking out of a backpack and exclaiming a cheeky ‘uh-oh!’. Not much else is known about the film, but Chris Columbus, who penned the 1984 original, is returning to the director’s chair. Hannah Marks will write the script from an original draft by Columbus and Final Destination Bloodlines duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein. Steven Spielberg serves as executive producer along with Maiden Voyage’s Eleanor Columbus.
Helmed by Joe Dante, Gremlins follows Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan) and his pet Gizmo, who then spawns more of his kind that evolve into the titular imp-like monsters that wreak havoc on Billy’s hometown during Christmas Eve. A sequel followed in 1990, with the Gremlins bringing the chaos to New York, and despite a meagre US$41 million total gross, it’s largely considered a cult classic. In comparison, its predecessor racked up US$212 million.
In addition to the comedy-horror pic, the studio also shifted the date for DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation’s Dynamic Duo, which will put a different spin on the origins of the first two Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, and feature a blend of filmmaking styles, including stop-motion, CGI, and puppetry. Originally slated to release on 30 June 2028, the feature is now scheduled for 22 September 2028.
Arthur Mintz is directing at New Orleans-based animation studio Swaybox, based on a script by Matthew Aldrich, Scott Neustadter, and Michael H. Weber. The Batman helmer Matt Reeves is handling the production, alongside DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran.
