Insanity may be doing the same thing over and over again and expecting something to change but FX is taking a very different approach with Far Cry. Rather than dropping audiences onto Rook Islands, Hope County or another familiar battleground from Ubisoft’s games, the upcoming live-action series is borrowing the franchise’s anthology formula to tell an original story, and cameras are officially rolling.
Production has begun on FX’s Far Cry series, nearly a year after the adaptation was first announced in late 2025. Fargo, Legion and Alien: Earth creator Noah Hawley is teaming up with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Welcome to Wrexham star Rob Mac on the project, with Mac also stepping in front of the camera.
Joining him in the cast are Steve Buscemi and Lizzy Caplan, although details surrounding their characters remain under wraps. Plot information is similarly scarce for now, including whether the adaptation will embrace some of the franchise’s stranger science-fiction elements or lean towards the grounded survival action found throughout many of its games.
Rather than directly adapting Far Cry 3, Far Cry 5 or any other individual instalment, FX plans to follow the broader structure that has defined Ubisoft’s long-running series. Each season will tell a standalone story in a different part of the world, with subsequent seasons introducing new characters and a new cast. That format mirrors the games themselves, which typically strand their protagonists in hostile environments controlled by dangerous figures.
Hawley has previously compared that structure to his own work on Fargo, where each season offers a different variation on a shared set of ideas. “What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme,” Hawley explained. “To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true.”
Far Cry has yet to receive a premiere date. Upon release, the series will stream on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ internationally. Just where its first unfortunate group of characters will find themselves stranded and what kind of lunatic might be waiting for them there remains to be seen.
