Director Luca Guadagnino’s (Challengers) upcoming biopic, Artificial, has received its first teaser trailer, which sees Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man) portraying OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
The minute-long trailer opens with rather disturbing shots of Garfield going to work as he narrates, “We’re going to call it ChatGPT. We open Pandora’s box together. The future is inevitable. Countries will fall. Industries are going to collapse. And we get to be the ones to shepherd people into this new world. I’m so excited to see it.”
The film will centre on the controversial events of 2023, which saw OpenAI’s board of directors ousting co-founder and chief executive Sam Altman over employee concerns about his handling of artificial intelligence safety and allegations of abusive behaviour. Despite this, Altman was subsequently reinstated as CEO five days later due to pressure from employees and investors, which not only led to widespread controversy but also impacted the financial markets and technology sector.
Artificial was initially developed and financed by Amazon MGM Studios, before dropping the film in May 2026, claiming that the film would be “better served if it were released by a different studio.” The film would later be rescued by American independent film production and distribution company Neon in July 2026.
The film will feature an ensemble cast, including Yura Borisov as chief scientific officer and co-founder of OpenAI Ilya Sutskever, Monica Barbaro as OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati, Cooper Hoffman as board chairman Greg Brockman, Mark Rylance as “the Godfather of AI” Geoffrey Hinton, and Ike Barinholtz as co-founder of OpenAI and CEO of Tesla Elon Musk.
Artificial will see its world premiere at the 2026 New York Film Festival on 5 October, before its theatrical release on 25 December 2026.
