Following the spectacular performance of Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro has predicted that the success of the web-slinging sequel is a positive omen for its other upcoming Marvel epic, Avengers: Doomsday.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, these comments were made during the company’s quarterly earnings call, where D’Amaro congratulated the film on its record-breaking opening and said that this “bodes well” for Avengers: Doomsday.
“I’d be remiss not to acknowledge and congratulate everyone on this past weekend’s record-breaking opening for Spider-Man,” he said. “It’s an unbelievable result, and it’s one more example that audiences will turn out in force for great theatrical experiences. Sixty-five years after his debut, Spider-Man remains one of the most popular characters from consumer products, parks, and streaming. And it goes without saying that the success of Spider-Man bodes well for our upcoming and highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday film.”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swung towards the top of the box office charts when it debuted on 30 July, garnering a staggering US$927 million global opening weekend, and breezing past the coveted US$1 billion shortly after. Avengers: Doomsday, on the other hand, which is set to open on 18 December, is already predicted to be potentially an even bigger hit, raking in $19 million in advance ticket sales online within one month.

While superhero fatigue has been quite prevalent in past Marvel films, with Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps all underperforming compared to the pre-Avengers: Endgame era, Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s performance proves that fans will still flock to cinemas for their favourite superhero films, and with Doomsday being the big team-up movie of the year, this makes it even more enticing.
While Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has not been announced as part of the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, Sadie Sink, who was introduced as Jean Grey, is set to appear in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, so there’s a chance that the web-slinger might also show up.
