‘Supergirl’ Hits Turbulence With US$68M Box Office Debut, Lower Than ‘Morbius’ & ‘The Marvels’

James Gunn’s Supergirl has failed to take flight at the box office, debuting to a disappointing US$68 million global haul over its opening weekend.

As reported by Variety, the film garnered US$38 million from 3,600 North American theatres and a further US$30 million from international markets, which leaves it far from breaking even, considering its hefty US$170 million budget, which doesn’t even include what’s surely an equally massive marketing budget.

With its performance, Supergirl marks one of the most disappointing superhero film openings in recent memory, losing out to the likes of 2023’s The Marvels (US$110.3M opening) and 2022’s Morbius (US$84M opening). The film did, however, outperform Sony’s Masters of the Universe, which only opened to US$54 million.

Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya), Supergirl marks the next film in Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe following 2025’s Superman. Starring Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El, cousin to David Corenswet’s Clark Kent, the film sees her travelling across the galaxy on a quest for revenge after Krypto gets poisoned by the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts). The film also stars Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll and Jason Momoa as Lobo.

Elsewhere at the box office, Jackass: Best and Last, the final instalment of the long-running reality slapstick comedy franchise, also hit a roadblock with a global opening of US$10.3 million (US$8.4 million domestic), the worst in the franchise. This weekend’s top five box office earnings were rounded off by Toy Story 5 at first place (US$70 million), Obsession at third place (US$9.8 million), and Disclosure Day at fifth place (US$8.1 million).
