As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the animated sequel launched to US$160 million in the United States, with a further US$152 million from international markets. Its domestic numbers alone already make it the biggest opening of the year so far, surpassing the previous holder of the top spot, Universal Pictures’ The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which saw a three-day opening haul of US$130.9 million domestically. Toy Story 5’s opening also marks a new record for the franchise, eclipsing the previous record holder, 2019’s Toy Story 4, which opened to US$238 million worldwide.

Directed by Andrew Stanton, Toy Story 5 sees the return of Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack), and the gang as they come face-to-face with Lilypad (Greta Lee), a tablet device that threatens to change playtime forever. The film also stars Scarlett Spears as Bonnie, Craig Robinson as Atlas, Annie Potts as Bo Peep, Wallace Shawn as Rex, John Ratzenberger as Hamm, Blake Clark as Slinky Dog, and Tony Hale as Forky.

Elsewhere at the box office, breakout horror movies Backrooms and Obsession continue their winning streak, both crossing the US$300 million mark globally, incredible milestones for the low-budget indie productions. Hailing from YouTuber Kane Parsons, Backrooms added another US$8.5 million internationally for a total gross of US$301 million globally, while Obsession, which comes from another YouTuber personality, Curry Barker, garnered an additional US$10.9 million for a total worldwide haul of US$333 million.

Rounding off this weekend’s box office was Steven Spielberg and Universal’s original sci-fi feature Disclosure Day, which brought in US$18.7 million internationally for a total haul of US$160 million globally after two weekends, and Paramount’s Scary Movie, which has now surpassed the US$200 million mark after adding another US$6.7 million.
