As a grand spectacle that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is building up to, Avengers: Doomsday will mark the reunion — or shall we say, re-assembly — of Earth’s mightiest heroes, as revealed in a five-hour marathon livestream earlier this March. Chris Evans’ Captain America was notably absent from the cast reveal, but as it turns out, there’s no cause for worry.
In Disney’s first trailer for the superhero outing, which now plays in theatres alongside the first screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash, the star-spangled Avenger is seen returning home to Peggy Carter, portrayed by Hayley Atwell, and holding a baby, before the on-screen text confirms, “Steve Rogers will return in Avengers: Doomsday.”
The one-minute reveal trailer then ends with a ticking clock that counts down to the film’s release exactly a year from now (18 December 2026). The remaining teasers will reportedly focus on other characters in the coming weeks, including Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
Fans last saw Captain America in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, where he returned the missing Infinity Stones to their rightful places across time and bestowed his Vibranium shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) as an elderly Steve. Afterwards, he went back in time to reunite with Peggy and live out their lives together.
Evans, Hemsworth, and Downey Jr. won’t be the only familiar faces, with Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Simu Liu, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman all reprising their respective roles. On the X-Men front, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, and Rebecca Romijn are set to make their MCU crossover debut.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theatres on 18 December 2026, while follow-up Avengers: Secret Wars opens on 17 December 2027.
