‘Mortal Kombat III’ Film Sets More Fatalities Ahead Of Sequel Release

Mortal Kombat II might not hit theatres until May 2026, but that’s not stopping Warner Bros. from looking to the future, as the sequel’s scriptwriter Jeremy Slater has already been hired to pen a third film.

As reported by Variety, Slater took to the stage at New York Comic Con alongside the sequel’s cast and crew to drop the news. “Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy and excited with this movie,” he said. “They are so convinced that there is a giant fanbase waiting for it that they already hired me to start writing the next instalment of Mortal Kombat.”

This announcement comes well ahead of the sequel’s release, which was pushed back from its original 24 October 2025 launch date to 15 May 2026. This move was reportedly made to avoid a packed end-of-year release slate, avoiding competition with the likes of Tron: Ares and Predator: Badlands.

The follow-up to 2021’s live-action Mortal Kombat film will once again be directed by Simon McQuoid, with its first trailer teasing a host of new faces including Karl Urban (The Boys) as Johnny CageAdeline Rudolph (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) as Kitana, bodybuilder Marytn Ford as Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen (The Spy Who Never Dies) as Sindel, Damon Herriman (Justified) as Quan Chi, and Tati Gabrielle (The 100) as Jade.
