Hideo Kojima Has Written ‘Death Stranding 3’ Concept, But Has No Plans To Make it

With the success of the Death Stranding series, fans are probably expecting an eventual third game soon, but for acclaimed writer and director Hideo Kojima, there are no plans in the pipeline for a third entry in the post-apocalyptic delivery simulator, even though he has already written a concept for Death Stranding 3.

This comes during an interview in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which was held as part of the Death Stranding 2 World Strand Tour. “I’m not planning to do that at the moment, because the ending of Death Stranding 2 was my finale of 1 and 2.” Kojima explained when asked about a potential third game, “But I already wrote the concept of Death Stranding 3, so I have that in data. I hope that someone would create it for me.”

This follows previous comments by the now 62-year-old director when speaking to VGC earlier in May, where he explained that he already has the concept laid down for the sequel, but has no intentions to make it himself, stating that he would rather pass it on to someone else.

Kojima’s intentions to pass on the mantle were also previously shared during an interview with Edge magazine, where he described how the COVID-19 pandemic led to him reflecting on his own mortality, prompting him to create the USB stick with all his ideas, serving as a will of sorts, which he passed to a personal assistant to continue making games at Kojima Productions after he’s gone.

For now, it’s clear fans won’t be receiving Death Stranding 3 anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing in store for the franchise, or Kojima Productions as a whole, as there are two Death Stranding film projects in the works: A live-action adaptation made in partnetship with A24, and an animated film which will feature an original storyline. Kojima is also working on a Metal Gear successor, Physint, and a horror project titled OD, made in collaboration with Xbox Studios and Jordan Peele.
