Dark Fantasy Manga ‘Claymore’ Gets Live-Action TV Adaptation From ‘Heroes’ Star Masi Oka

Heroes and Hawaii Five-o star Masi Oka has been vocal about his love of manga, demonstrated through his hobby of collecting them and a co-producing stint on Netflix’s Death Note live-action movie. The actor will soon have another adaptation project to his name, taking the form of a live-action television series inspired by Norihiro Yagi’s dark fantasy work, Claymore.

As reported by Deadline, the project is a partnership between CBS Studios, Propagate Content, and Oka, who serves as executive producer alongside Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, Rodney Ferrell and Japanese publisher Shueisha. The search for a writer to bring Yagi’s version to the screen is underway.

Not much else is known about the adaptation, but it seeks to honour the action and “complex moral dilemmas” of the source material. Released in 2001, the original manga follows a half-human, who belongs to a group of female warriors called Claymores, as she hunts the Yoma, shape-shifting predators that prey on humans, in a dark, medieval world.

Claymore was previously adapted into a 26-episode anime in 2007, with Hiroyuki Tanaka on the directing front and animation studio Madhouse (Death Note, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End) responsible for production. In the same year, Weekly Shonen Jump ceased its serialisation after six years, prompting a transition to Jump Square. It finished after a 13-year run in 2014.

A release date has yet to be announced for the live-action series.
