The long-running life-simulation game The Sims is set to receive its big-screen adaptation. Amazon MGM Studios announced on 17 September that the film is currently in development, with Kate Herron — best known for the 2021 Disney+ series Loki — at the helm.
Herron is also set to co-write the movie’s script with Briony Redmon, while LuckyChap and Vertigo Entertainment will produce the project alongside Electonic Arts’ The Sims team. This project marks the latest collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and LuckyChap following My Old Ass (2024) and Saltburn (2023).
Apart from directing the first season of Marvel Studios Loki, Herron also worked on Sex Education (2019-2023) and the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us.
This announcement comes as part of a report from Variety that Electronic Arts has no plans for The Sims 5. Instead, the latest edition in the franchise, Sims 4, will continue to be the foundational experience, receiving further updates and paid expansions. This will make the 2014 title the longest-running installment in the franchise’s 25-year history.
Separately, a multiplayer-focused addition to the franchise, currently dubbed Project Rene, is in the works and will feature partnerships with current Sims players to sell their in-game creations via the EA store as “Creator Kits”. According to the Sims team, Project Rene is “focused on building ways for friends to meet, connect, and share while playing together in an all-new world.”
Additionally, EA’s vice president and general manager of the Sims franchise, Kate Gorman, revealed that the main reason behind the decision not to release a fifth game was to prevent players from starting all over again after decades of progress in the current game.
There is currently no confirmed release date for both The Sims movie and Project Rene.
