‘Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse’ Will Not Use Generative AI

Despite Sony’s recent announcement that it would look at using artificial intelligence (AI) to produce films and TV shows more efficiently, the Spider-Verse will be the exception. Producer Chris Miller assured fans that the upcoming instalment, Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse, would not use generative AI.

“There is no generative AI in Beyond the Spider-Verse and there never will be,” Miller wrote in an X/Twitter post in response to a fan petitioning Sony not to use generative AI in the film. “One of the main goals of the films is to create new visual styles that have never been seen in a studio CG film, not steal the generic plagiarized average of other artists’ work.”

After Beyond The Spider-Verse was delayed following the SAG-AFTRA strikes, the film is still in production and was originally supposed to swing into cinemas on 29 March 2024. In place of this, a short film, which dealt with Miles’ inner world, was released. Miller promised a “satisfying conclusion” to the Spider-Verse with the next film, and that it would be as “emotional as the other ones.”

As the AI trend sweeps through Hollywood, it’s heartening to know that there are still films who are determined to support artistic development.
