Viggo Mortensen Open To Reprising Aragorn In ‘The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum’

In a recent interview with GQ, Viggo Mortensen, beloved for his role as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, expressed his openness to returning to Middle-earth in the next installment of The Lord of The Rings film franchise, currently under the working title The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Mortensen emphasised that any return would need to make sense for both him and the character given his age.

“Sure,” Mortensen responded when asked about reprising Aragorn. “I don’t know exactly what the story is, I haven’t heard. Maybe I’ll hear about it eventually. I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise.”

With The Hunt for Gollum being the first of two confirmed live-action films announced in May 2024, the storyline is speculated to be a prequel, considering Gollum’s fate in the original trilogy. The film will see Andy Serkis (Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle) returning to star and direct, with Peter Jackson (King Kong, Mortal Engines) and Jackson’s frequent collaborators Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens on board as producers.

As the canonical The Lord of the Rings film universe expands beyond Jackson’s original trilogy and The Hobbit series, Warner Bros. is committed to revitalising what it calls a “largely underused franchise.” This expansion includes Amazon’s continuation with The Rings of Power TV show, which is set to release its second season on 29 August 2024, following the success of its debut season in 2022. Additionally, the animated film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will delve into the history of Helm’s Deep and King Helm Hammerhand when it premieres on 13 December 2024.
