‘Yu-Gi-Oh! GX’ Anime Remaster Revisits Duelling Nostalgia For 20th Anniversary

It’s easy to forget just how far the card-duelling fun that is Yu-Gi-Oh! has come, with the franchise now home to multiple mainline anime series and spin-off manga, video games, and of course, the highly popular real-world card game. Going back to its sort-of roots is a remaster of the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime, debuting in April 2025 to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Announced at Jump Festa 2025, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monster GX 20th Remaster will bring a renewed shine to the fan-favourite series that originally ran from October 2004 to March 2008. While the end date was not specified, it’s expected to follow through with the three-year duration and conclude in 2028.

“Thanks to everyone supporting me, I’ve been able to consistently face and play Jaden Yuki for almost half my life,” said KENN, who returns to voice the protagonist character. “As I gain more experience, the more I realise how incredible all the staff and cast were at the time! Congratulations again on the remastered version! Gotcha! That was a fun duel!”

The remaining major cast will also retain their original Japanese actors, including the late Taiki Matsuno (Hajime Kindaichi in Kindaichi Case Files) as Jun Manjome / Chazz Princeton, Sanae Kobayashi (Allen in D.Gray Man) as Alexis Rhodes / Asuka Tenjoin, Masami Suzuki (Princess Kai in Samurai Warriors) as Surys Truesdale / Sho Marufuji, and Akira Ishida (Athrun Zala in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED) as Aster Phoenix / Ed Phoenix.

The synopsis for Yu-Gi-Oh! GX reads, “Set several years after the previous Yu-Gi-Oh! series, GX follows a new generation of duelists at the prestigious Duel Academy—a highly competitive boarding school where pencils and books have been replaced by Duel Disks and monster cards! Still, it’s not just about making the grade for these up and coming students – it’s about becoming the next King of Games!”

Additionally, a monthly continuation of Konami’s Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Game: The Chronicles promotional anime shorts will begin in the same month. The latest anime in the long-running franchise is Yu-Gi-Oh! Go Rush!!, which first premiered in April 2022.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monster GX 20th Remaster starts airing in April 2025.
