X-Men ‘97 Premieres 20 March, To Continue Events Of Iconic 90s Cartoon

Oh the nostalgia, Disney has announced the release date of Marvel Animation’s X-Men ’97 on Disney+ along with a first trailer. ’80s and ’90s kids who grew up watching the original series will have major goosebumps from the trailer’s soundtrack, which carries the iconic series’ theme song.

Judging from the trailer below, the new animated series looks to be picking up the story after Professor X’s departure at the end of the original ’90s series, X-Men: The Animated Series.

Everyone’s favourite X-Men characters Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Storm, Gambit, Rogue, Beast, Bishop and Jubilee are returning in the new series. Cyclops is the team leader, after Charles Xavier’s departure, and Magneto makes an appearance to lay claim to everything Professor X once owned. But based on the official synopsis, it looks like Mister Sinister will be the main antagonist in the new series. We’re betting Magneto will eventually join up with the X-Men to face off against Sinister.

What is X-Men ‘97?

  • The Disney+ show is a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series (1992 – 1997).
  • The original series is based on the X-Men comic books of that period, and features a classic line-up that includes Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Jubilee and Jean Grey. It’s the first X-Men project from Marvel Studios since it regained the rights for the characters from its acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
  • It will follow the events of the original series that ended with the departure of Professor X into space to find a cure for his terminal illness. The new series will retain the look and feel of the original, including updated costumes based on artist Jim Lee’s designs from the comics of that era.
  • The original inspired several spin-offs, especially with video games including X-Men vs Street Fighter and the X-Men vs Capcom series.
  • Several voice actors from the original are returning to reprise their roles, while others will voice new characters in the revival.
  • While a Marvel Studios product, the series is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe though the team has indicated there will be links. A version of the show’s Professor X appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, played by Patrick Stewart who originated the live-action role in the X-Men film franchise.
  • The 10-episode revival premieres 20 March 2024 and a second season is currently in production.
