‘Until Dawn’ Film Director Teases Time Loop Plotline To Match Game Mechanics

Sony Pictures Entertainment has just dropped the first trailer for its upcoming Until Dawn movie, and it features a rather unique twist on the game’s branching narrative mechanic – time loops. Check out the minute-long first look here:

Those who have played Supermassive Games’ 2015 interactive drama horror game Until Dawn would no doubt be familiar with the game’s choice-based system, leaving the fate of its characters and the overall storyline in the hands of the player and the choices they make. According to the film’s director David F. Sandberg, the movie will adopt this mechanic via a time-looping system similar to the one seen in 2017’s Happy Death Day and its 2019 sequel.

“One of the creative things the game did is that people make different choices and die in different ways,” Sandberg explained, “The movie has this mechanic where things start over and they get to try again.”

“Every time they come back to life, it’s like they are in a new horror genre, to survive, they have to make it until dawn,” he added.

Actor Peter Stromare, who reprises his role in the games as Dr. Hill, also appears in the trailer, stating that he was “very proud to be part of this evolution onto the screen.” We also get our first looks at the film’s cast of characters, including Ella Rubin (The Idea of You), Michael Cimino (Love, Victor), Ji-young Yoo (Expats), and Odessa A’zion (Hellraiser), as they arrive at a mysterious cabin and subsequently get killed in increasingly brutal ways.

As to who among them will survive their various deaths and loops to escape the cabin unscathed, we’ll just have to wait and see when the Until Dawn movie releases on 25 April 2025.
