‘Twilight’ TV Series Draws Breath At Lionsgate

Time for Twihards to whip out their ‘Team Edward’ or ‘Team Jacob’ t-shirts because Twilight is coming to the small screen!

Lionsgate is developing a show based on the popular vampire book series by author Stephenie Meyers. The Twilight book saga, consisting of entries Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn, were previously adapted into a film franchise between 2008 and 2012. The five films grossed over US$3 billion at the global box office and shot main leads Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner into stardom.

Twilight tells the story of Bella Swan, a 17-year-old girl who develops a deep and intense relationship with a vampire named Edward Cullen. Their relationship puts Bella in grave danger as other evil vampires seek to drink her blood while the Cullens do all they can to keep her safe. Bella and Edward’s relationship is later tested when Bella’s old friend Jacob Black, a werewolf, enters the picture.

The series is still in early development so no showrunner has been assigned. Thus far, Wyck Godfrey and Erik Feig are attached as executive producers and author Meyer is in talks to return. No release date has been set either.

Twilight is not the only popular book series turned successful film franchise to be adapted for TV. Warner Bros recently confirmed that a Harry Potter TV series is currently in the works with J.K Rowling. Last year, Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power expanded on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings universe.
