Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft Crowned Best-Selling Video Game Heroine By Guinness World Records

Lost artefacts aren’t the only items that make up Lara Croft‘s collection, with two world records set to grace the family manor. According to the Guinness World Records, the beloved adventurer has made history as the best-selling video game heroine, putting her “way out ahead” of the competition.

The Tomb Raider star also notched the title of most magazine covers for a video game character, appearing as a cover girl 2,300 times across publications such as Newsweek, TIME, and more, as of this April. Separately, the series has sold over 100 million copies since its debut in 1996, and the next instalment is currently in development at Crystal Dynamics, in collaboration with Amazon Games.

Scott Amos, head of studio at Crystal Dynamics, said, “As tremendous fans of Lara Croft, we’ve been so fortunate to join the Tomb Raider community on this journey throughout the years. She’s been aspirational and inspirational for nearly three decades, and it’s an honour to have her legacy recognised by Guinness World Records.

“These achievements remind us of her enduring cultural impact and the passionate global fanbase. We’re thrilled to be building a bright future for Lara Croft, driven by her spirit of curiosity, courage, and adventure.”

The latest accolade win is a natural course of progression for Lara, who was previously recognised as the Most Successful Human Videogame Heroine in 2006 by, surprise, the Guinness World Records. Shadow of the Tomb Raider marked the latest mainline entry in the franchise, rounding out the Survivor trilogy in 2018.

In the same year, Swedish actress Alicia Vikander portrayed the character in a live-action film adaptation by Roar Uthaug, which has since spawned other multimedia projects, including an upcoming live-action series starring Sophie Turner and the animated show Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, both on Prime Video. The latter will end with a second season premiering this December.
