‘Wednesday Season 3’ Adds Frequent Tim Burton Collaborator Eva Green As Aunt Ophelia

The Addams Family reunion is slowly coming together, as another relative joins in on the dysfunctional dynamics. Longtime Tim Burton collaborator Eva Green has been cast in Season 3 of Wednesday as Aunt Ophelia, Morticia Addams’ (Catherine Zeta-Jones) sister, last seen in the season two finale.

The French star’s casting was announced on the show’s social media pages, including on Instagram via a short teaser of her character’s debut, which shows the back silhouette of a flower-crown-wearing blonde woman, scrawling “Wednesday must die” on a wall.

As established in the Netflix hit series, Ophelia was institutionalised at Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital after losing control of her psychic powers, but later escaped and vanished from the surface of Earth. In the final episode of Season 2, Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) gets a vision of her while holding onto the latter’s old journal, muttering under her breath, “Aunt Ophelia”.

“Eva Green has always brought an exhilarating, singular presence to the screen — elegant, haunting, and beautifully unpredictable. Those qualities make her the perfect choice for Aunt Ophelia. We’re excited to see how she transforms the role and expands Wednesday’s world,” said creators, showrunners, and writers Al Gough and Miles Millar on the Tudum blog.

Green added, “I’m thrilled to join the woefully twisted world of Wednesday as Aunt Ophelia. This show is such a deliciously dark and witty world. I can’t wait to bring my own touch of cuckooness to the Addams family.”

The actress is the first major cast addition for Season 3 of Wednesday, which currently has no release date. Her previous stints with Burton include 2012’s Dark Shadows, 2016’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, and 2019’s Dumbo, where she starred as Angelique Bouchard, the titular character, and Colette Marchant, respectively.

As far as series newcomers are concerned, the second season cast Lady Gaga in a cameo role as Rosaline Rotwood, alongside Steve Buscemi as Principal Dort, Billie Piper as Isadora Capri, Joanna Lumley as Grandmama Hester Frump, and more. The first half racked up a record-breaking 50 million views in its first four days, and an Addams Family animated reboot is already in the works.
