The first trailer for Wonka is finally here, and it’s given us a gook look at Timothée Chalamet as the man of the hour himself, Willy Wonka.
Wonka is a prequel to Roald Dahl’s beloved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and sees the Dune actor as a younger version of Willy Wonka before he opened his famous chocolate factory.
The trailer opens with Chalamet narrating how his character had spent seven years perfecting his craft and has a dream of opening up his own chocolate shop. The road to success is not easy, especially on this side of town where a cartel of chocolate businesses has crushed any newcomer. Thankfully, Wonka is an eccentric, creative and absolutely insane chocolatier who surprises the townsfolk with magical chocolates that defy gravity.
The trailer finally ends with Hugh Grant as a CGI Oompa Loompa.
“To work on something that will have an uncynical young audience, that was just a big joy,” said Chalamet in May. “That’s why I was drawn to it. In a time and climate of intense political rhetoric, when there’s so much bad news all the time, this is hopefully going to be a piece of chocolate.”
Wonka also stars Oliva Colman, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Keegan-Michael Key and more. It is directed by Paul King (Paddington) and is slated to release this December.
