During an exclusive interview with Men’s Journal, Key hints that the new additions from the Mario universe to the movie will excite hardcore Nintendo fans. “One thing I can say about the second movie is that it’s a little broader in scope, and where it takes place is very intriguing lore and the Mario world,” He explained. “[Fans are] going to find some really fantastic Easter eggs and it’s been very exciting so far.”

“I feel like what they’ve done creatively is they’ve really widened out the universe that these characters live in and we’re going to meet some new folks. We’re going to meet some new folks that are old favourites and some folks that I think are really deep cuts, but because of the way the story’s laying itself out right now, those characters are going to be very intriguing.” the actor added.

2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a smash hit at the box office, and already featured tons of easter eggs and secrets for the eagle-eyed viewer. Ramping up the fan service for the sequel is no doubt the logical next step, and Key’s enthusiasm for what’s to come further hints at good tidings for what will undoubtedly be a bigger and more exciting return to the Mario universe.
