‘The Simpsons Movie’ Sequel Coming In 2027, 20 Years After Original

Sometimes, dreams do come true. 20 years after The Simpsons Movie, Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie are returning to theatres in Summer 2027, but under Disney’s 20th Century banner this time.

“Woohoo! The Simpsons are coming to theatres with an all-new movie on 23 July 2027,” reads the announcement post on social media, which features an image of Homer dragging a sprinkled-covered doughnut in the shape of ‘2’ with his finger, with the caption “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”

No plot details about the new film were shared, but it will premiere on the same date as the original film. It also takes the place of an untitled Marvel project, now removed from the release calendar, leaving the period between Avengers: Doomsday on 18 December 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars on 17 December 2027 devoid of a comic book movie.

Created by Matt Groening, The Simpsons is the longest-running animated series and sitcom in television history, and has recently been renewed for a 40th season, scheduled to air during 2028 and 2029. The show is set in the fictional town of Springfield, and stars the voices of Dan Castellaneta as Homer Simpson, Julie Kavner as Marge, Nancy Cartwright as Bart, and Yeardley Smith as Lisa.

As for the first film, it earned US$536 million at the global box office in 2007, and centres on the Environmental Protection Agency encasing the Simpsons’ hometown of Springfield in a dome after Homer taints the area’s water supply.
