Scuttle Swims & Sebastian Looks Disturbingly Real In ‘The Little Mermaid’ Trailer & Character Posters

Disney has released a new trailer to The Little Mermaid, as well as a series of character posters that are beautiful for some and disturbingly realistic for others.

The new trailer, titled ‘Choices’, featured a scene from the movie where Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) tells Ariel (Halle Bailey) that she can’t live in the human world unless she becomes human herself.

While McCarthy’s Ursula is the focus of this particular trailer, we can’t help but pay attention to Ariel’s animal friends who made an appearance too. Flounder (Jacob Tremblay), who is well known for being a chunky yellow and blue striped fish, has more muted colours now and Scuttle (Awkwafina), the eccentric seagull, can now swim underwater too.

As for the character posters, Sebastian (Daveed Diggs) looks incredibly realistic. So much so that we want to pour semi-thick, sweet and savoury tomato-and-chilli-based sauce over him. That said, the other posters featuring our lead stars Bailey and McCarthy and the rest of the cast are quite stunning.

The life-likeness of Sebastian and Flounder may take a while to adjust to, especially for fans who have grown up watching the original 1989 animated film. After all, this isn’t the first time Disney has brought their cartoon animal characters to the screen. The Lion King is a good example of that and was relatively well-received by fans so let’s offer The Little Mermaid the same grace.

The Little Mermaid stars Bailey, McCarthy, Tremblay, Awkwafina, Diggs, Simone Ashley, Jessica Alexander, Javier Bardem, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Lorena Andrea, Emily Coates, Noma Dumezweni, Kajsa Mohammar, Art Malik, Karolina Conchet and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric.

The Little Mermaid swims to theatres on 26 May 2023.
