TGA 2024: ‘Elden Ring Nightreign’ Spin-Off Shows Co-Op Action, Surprises Fans

FromSoftware just dropped a bombshell at The Game Awards 2024 with the announcement of Elden Ring Nightreign, the next entry in the Elden Ring series.

While the trailer left much of the plot shrouded in mystery, it showed off gameplay largely familiar to the Elden Ring base game, with a notable distinction — co-op combat. Several scenes in the trailer showcased multiple Tarnished battling together, pulling off synchronised attacks and impressive, acrobatic moves.

Just this month, FromSoftware studio president and game director Hidetaka Miyazaki shared that a sequel to Elden Ring isn’t in the works. Earlier in the year, Miyazaki had also said that there are no plans for a second DLC to the game beyond Shadow of the Erdtree. Technically these details could still be true; The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley prefaced the trailer by describing the surprise as “a brand new, standalone game”. Instead of being a direct sequel, Nightreign could very well be a prequel, possibly detailing the events that shaped the Lands Between before the chaos of Elden Ring and its DLC, Shadows of the Erdtree.

Elden Ring Nightreign is slated to launch across PS4, PS5, Xbox platforms, and PC via Steam in 2025.
