It seems a return trip to the Lands Between won’t be in the cards for quite some time, as FromSoftware has no plans for Elden Ring 2 — for now, that is.
Speaking to Game Watch after the PlayStation Awards, studio president and game director Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that the studio has plans for multiple projects in the pipeline, none of which are a direct sequel to its 2022 worldwide-hit Elden Ring, its most successful game yet and winner of TGA 2022’s Game of the Year award.
“We’re not really considering developments such as an Elden Ring 2,” Miyazaki said while clarifying that the studio is still open to revisiting the franchise “in some form in the future.” Miyazaki also confirmed that he has a hand in directing some of the ongoing projects the studio has in development.
For now, it’s anyone’s guess as to what’s next for the studio. In terms of the Elden Ring IP, it has previously been confirmed that Shadow of the Erdtree will be the game’s only DLC, but there have been rumours of an Elden Ring free-to-play mobile game in the works by Tencent. Elden Ring aside, a previously released job listing looking to recruit modellers for robot characters might hint at an upcoming Armored Core game or DLC in development.
While the recent revelation may understandably be disappointing for fans, it’s rather likely that the studio would make its eventual return to the franchise, considering that Elden Ring is FromSoftware’s best-received game so far, previously smashing an incredible milestone of 25 million units sold.
