Studio Ghibli’s First Trailer For All-CGI Earwig and the Witch Takes Some Getting Use To

Studio Ghibli is returning with its very first all-CGI animated film, Earwig and the Witch

After a long wait, the studio has finally released its official English-dubbed trailer where we get to see more of what’s to come in the film. The trailer shows us snippets of Earwig (Taylor Paige Henderson) growing up in an orphanage, before being adopted by the witch Bella Yaga (Vanessa Marshall). It also introduces us to the Mandrake and Thomas the cat, voiced by Richard E. Grant and Dan Stevens respectively in the English dub. The trailer also features an English cover of the film’s theme song by Kacey Musgraves, who also voices Earwig’s mother.

Being Studio Ghibli’s first all-CGI film, the trailer is certainly a departure from what we are used to as compared to the traditionally 2D animation from the studio but it still very much has the whimsical charm we’ve come to expect from a Studio Ghibli work.

The film, otherwise known as Aya and the Witch in Japan, is directed by Goro Miyazaki, the son of Studio Ghibli’s famed co-founder and animation director Hayao Miyazaki. The film is currently airing in Japan on NHK and is expected to make its global debut in early 2021.
