Square Enix Ends 26-Year-Old Debate On How To Pronounce Final Fantasy VII’s Cait Sith

One of the biggest mysteries in the Final Fantasy VII universe has finally been solved. After a long 26 years, Square Enix gave confirmation on how to correctly pronounce Cait Sith, the beloved feline character that rides on the back of a huge stuffed moogle.

“In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Cait Sith is pronounced ‘Kate Sihth’,’ confirms the game’s official account on X (formerly known as Twitter). Essentially, the name is said the same way that it reads on paper. “We saw many of you were asking so we hope this helps!” said the company.

The announcement has been a long time coming, with the discussion dating all the back to the original game release in 1997. In 2008, a few users on GameFAQs took notice of the name’s Gaelic roots, theorising it could be pronounced something like “Ket Shee”, which is closer to the Celtic tongue.

Interestingly enough, no character has explicitly called him by name in any piece of Final Fantasy VII media. While Cait Sith has had English voice actors in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus, there was never official confirmation of the right way to do so – until now, that is.

The former Gold Saucer fortune-teller will be a playable party member in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, so fans just might hear his name in-game for the first time. The highly-anticipated sequel to 2020’s Final Fantasy VII Remake hits PS5 on 29 February 2024 with some new features in tow, including a playable Sephiroth and Red XIII, synergy moves, a seamless map, and more.
