Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse The Spot

‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Taps Jason Schwartzman To Voice New Villain, The Spot

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse isn’t due to swing into cinemas until a year later, but more information has surfaced about the big bad that Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales will be facing, and it’s a familiar face for comic book fans.

The Spot is joining the Into the Spider-Verse sequel, with Jason Schwartzman (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Klaus) set to voice him. Described as “Miles Morales’ most formidable foe yet,” the abstract-looking antagonist is shown lunging for Miles in a brand new image, whose leg promptly goes through the former’s body to deal a blow to Spider-Gwen instead.

That’s because the black holes on the villain’s white body are actually inter-dimensional portals, made to feel like “living ink”. They can transport him anywhere he wants to go, and create new ones out of thin air and send other people and objects through them.

The character, otherwise known as Dr. Jonathan Ohmn, first appeared in 1985’s Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #98, and was created Al Milgrom and Herb Trimpe. In the comics, he was the college roommate of Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio, and has a lot of connections to the other villains in the Spider-Man rogues’ gallery. While typically used as foil to the heroics of Daredevil and Peter Parker, it seems he’ll be wrecking havoc upon Miles Morales and his allies in the Spider-Verse instead.

In light of his abilities, it only makes sense that The Spot will be in Across the Spider-Verse, as the animated movie will involves the exploration of the Multiverse. It should also be noted that in the comics, the villain got his powers in a science experiment gone wrong while working for Kingpin, who happens to be the villain of the first film (surprise, surprise).

Schwartzman is joined by the announced voice cast of Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfield, Jack Johnson, Issa Rae, and Oscar Isaac. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is scheduled to hit theaters on 2 June 2023.
