Full of sci-fi and time travelling adventures, anything is possible with Rick and Morty. And once again, they have proved that nothing will stop their travels as our favourite duo have now jumped across genres and turned into an anime.
Over the weekend, Adult Swim joined the Comic-Con@Home event for some new announcements and Rick and Morty vs. Genocider was one of the few things rolled out to audiences.
Directed by Tower of God director Takashi Sano, the animated short has pair ending up in a psychedelic futuristic Tokyo to confront a group of evil Mortys, and weird shenanigans ensue. There were so many plot twists in the short span of time that even we had a hard time wrapping our heads around it. The Rick and Morty anime was animated by Telecom Animation Film, the same studios who produced acclaimed anime such as Akira, Lupin III, and more.
This isn’t the first time Adult Swim has released a Rick and Morty anime as they previously paid a gorgeous tribute to Lone Wolf & Club in an action-packed samurai short. There, Rick WTM-72 stars in Ogami Ittō’s role as a sword-wielding shogun.
The short was produced over a period of one year and was headed by key figures in the anime industry such as director and scriptwriter Kaichi Satō, producer Koji Iijima, and executive producer Maki Terashima-Furuta.
Rick and Morty is now between seasons and we eagerly await the release of the new season. But from our experiences with past seasons, this may take up to a couple more months, or even a year or two, to actually happen.
