PS5 Internal SSD Storage Will Be Enabled This Summer

Finally, according to Bloomberg, it looks like Sony is just about ready to enable that internal SSD expansion slot that was disabled since the launch of the PS5.

For folks who managed to get hold of a PlayStation 5 would have realized how fast the 667GB of internal SSD storage space runs out. And even though you can run your PS4 games directly off an external SSD, there is no way you can do the same for PS5 games.

The upgrade will reportedly release this summer via a firmware update that will enable the internal SSD slot and added support for more drives. This probably means we just might be able to purchase one of these NVMe PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSDs to give our PS5s a nice bump in internal storage real soon. The update is also expected to unlock higher cooling-fan speeds to ensure the console doesn’t overheat.

“As previously announced, we are working to enable M.2 SSD storage expansion for PlayStation 5. The timing has not been announced and details will be shared later,” said a Sony spokesperson.
