Netflix is gearing up to redefine the Terminator franchise with its new animated series, Terminator Zero. Set against the backdrop of a futuristic war between humans and AI, the series introduces Eiko, a resistance fighter tasked with safeguarding a key figure in the development of an AI that could rival Skynet.
Eiko, voiced by Sonoya Mizuno (House of the Dragon), is portrayed as a determined protector operating in a world fraught with danger from advanced machines. Her mission is critical — to defend scientist Malcolm Lee, voiced by André Holland (Moonlight), who is on the verge of a breakthrough with an AI known as Kokoro. The tension escalates as the cyborg assassin relentlessly pursues Lee, illustrating the high stakes of their struggle.
The series sets its narrative across two timelines, intertwining past and future to deepen the lore of the Terminator universe. The voice cast also features Timothy Olyphant (Scream 2) as the Terminator, bringing a fresh voice to the iconic role, and Ahsoka‘s Rosario Dawson as Kokoro, adding layers to the narrative with their characters.
Terminator Zero aims to captivate audiences with its rich animation and complex storytelling. The eight-episode series is produced by Japanese animation powerhouse Production IG, the studio behind hits like Haikyu!! and Kaiju No. 8.
This new take on the Terminator saga is a bold step by Netflix, utilising the animation format to explore untapped areas of its universe and introduce new characters that expand the narrative scope.
The series is set to premiere on 29 August and has been dubbed “Judgment Day” within the franchise.
