Netflix To Scare Up Three More ‘Fear Street’ Films

Since 1992, R.L. Stine has been giving young readers nightmares with his Goosebumps and Fear Street series. Both franchises have found renewed success through adaptations, with Goosebumps landing on Disney+ and Fear Street making waves on Netflix. Following the triumph of Netflix’s first Fear Street trilogy, Netflix announced a new instalment, Fear Street: Prom Queen. Now, it seems more films could be on the horizon.

The original Fear Street trilogy on Netflix centred around the tale of Shadyside, a town plagued by a witch’s curse that spanned decades of gruesome murders. The trilogy explored different time periods, from the 1990s to 1978, and ultimately the 17th century, uncovering the truth about Sarah Fier, the misunderstood figure behind the town’s dark history. While Prom Queen was initially believed to be a standalone film set in 1988, R.L. Stine recently hinted that this may not be the case.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote Goosebumps: The Vanishing, the author revealed that three more Fear Street movies are in development. “The writers are working,” Stine shared, adding that he’s “got his fingers crossed” that Netflix will greenlight the trilogy. If true, these films would mark a return to the format that made the original trilogy a hit.

Interestingly, Prom Queen, said to be directed by horror/thriller veteran Chloe Okuno (Watcher, V/H/S/94), might serve as a bridge to this potential new trilogy. The decision to release the original trilogy one week apart allowed for suspenseful cliffhangers without prolonged waits, a format that could be replicated.

Stine’s Prom Queen synopsis is as follows: “A spring night…soft moonlight…five beautiful Prom Queen candidates…dancing couples at the Shadyside High prom — these should be the ingredients for romance. But stir in one brutal murder — then another, and another — and the recipe quickly turns to horror. Lizzie McVay realizes that someone is murdering the five Prom Queen candidates one by one — and that she may be next on the list! Can she stop the murderer before the dance is over — for good?”

While Netflix has yet to confirm the additional films, Fear Street: Prom Queen is set to premiere in 2025, keeping audiences eagerly awaiting their next trip to Shadyside. With Stine’s involvement and a potential trilogy in development, the Fear Street universe seems poised to expand its terrifying legacy.
