By Order of the Peaky F***ing Blinders, Tommy Shelby is making a grand return in the upcoming Peaky Blinders film, which is currently untitled but already stirring excitement among fans. Netflix has provided a first look at Cillian Murphy reprising his iconic role as the gangster family leader, and production has officially begun with Murphy and series creator Steven Knight on set.
Since Netflix greenlit the Peaky Blinders film in June, casting announcements have been rolling in. Newly minted Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer, A Quiet Place Part II) is joined by Rebecca Ferguson (Dune, Mission Impossible), Barry Keoghan (Saltburn, The Banshees of Inisherin), and Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs, The Hateful Eight), with the story transitioning into the Second World War era. A recent snapshot from the set features Murphy against a backdrop of dark bricks, sporting visibly greyer hair, hinting at a time jump in the narrative.
The film, directed by Tom Harper, a regular on the series, promises to carry the Peaky Blinders saga into and possibly beyond WWII. “The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders,” Knight hinted. He expressed a desire to let the film’s narrative evolve organically, focusing on introducing a new generation of characters while maintaining strong ties to the Shelbys, particularly Tommy. “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,” Murphy stated, “It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”
Details of the plot remain under wraps, with Knight suggesting that the direction of the story will rely heavily on the unfolding events of the Peaky Blinders film itself. He hinted at the potential emergence of new key characters who will take the franchise forward. His full comments to Esquire is as follows:
“The film, I know exactly what it’s about. And I know what two stories it’s going to tell. How the story will unfold, I don’t know. What will happen after that, I want that to depend on the film. For all we know somebody is going to pop out – I think I know who it’s going to be.
In series six we’re bringing in the new generation, and they are going to be part of what happens in the film. I think it’s finding those actors that you just watch, and you think, there you go. There’s the future.”
Director Tom Harper expressed his excitement about the Peaky Blinders film, acknowledging the high anticipation and enthusiasm from the cast, crew, and fans alike. “There’s a great feeling of anticipation and excitement amongst our outstanding cast and crew,” Harper stated. “We’re grateful to the fans for getting us to this point and believe this next chapter is going to deliver something extraordinary.”
