MSI Enters The OLED Gaming Monitor Market With Its Own 34″ QD-OLED Display

Hot on the heels of Alienware’s 34-inch QD-OLED monitor, MSI has revealed its first Quantum Dot OLED monitor at Computex 2022, the MEG 342C QD-OLED.

It is a 34-inch, ultrawide curved screen that has a 0.1ms response time and a 175Hz refresh rate. If the specs look familiar, that is because they are similar to Alienware’s; and both MSI and Alienware monitors use Samsung’s Quantum Dot filter on OLED panels.

OLED panels are the next step up for gaming monitors, after years of IPS panels. Technology seems to have caught up in 2022 such that it is now possible for gaming monitors, on top of the expected fast response times, to have high brightness, darker blacks and accurate colours as well.

MSI’s announcement puts it in an increasingly crowded field for the nascent OLED gaming monitor market. Besides Alienware’s monitor that is already launched, Samsung’s own 34-inch Odyssey G8QNB QD-OLED monitor is also coming out in 2022. All three (Alienware, MSI, Samsung) will most likely be similar in performance, so the differentiating factors will likely be price and what additional accessories the respective QD-OLED monitors offer.

The dark horse in this race is LG, which has also just announced its own UltraGear 48GQ900. It will be a 48-inch display at 0.1ms response time and 120Hz refresh rate.

All great news for gamers looking to upgrade to OLED gaming monitors later this year, whether it is Alienware, MSI, Samsung, LG, or any other brand looking to jump in.
