It appears that we can now put a face to the coolest (heh) Kombatant in the upcoming 2021 Mortal Kombat movie reboot.
Joe Taslim has been tipped to take on the mantle of the iconic Sub-Zero in the Mortal Kombat movie. The Indonesian actor and professional martial artist is the first official name secured to star in the James Wan-produced movie, which is set to begin principal shooting later this year.
For those unfamiliar with Taslim’s work, then here’s a brief lowdown of his background. Taslim, 38, began his career as a martial artist, and was part of Indonesia’s national Judo team. He also is well-versed in a variety of other styles, including pencak silat, wushu, and taekwondo, so in a way he would fit the role of the iconic Mortal Kombat character.
His filmography is none too shabby either, with an award-winning role in the 2011 Indonesian crime film The Raid, as well as appearances in high-profile Hollywood movies such as the Cinemax Original series Warrior, Fast & Furious 6 and Star Trek Beyond.
If anything, Taslim is more than equipped to don the cowl of Sub-Zero. Now, we’re curious about two things: will this new movie version of Sub-Zero be featured with the faceguard or not, and who will his archrival Scorpion be portrayed by?
Wan will be producing the live-action reboot of the popular fighting game franchise under his production company, Atomic Monster. Taking on the directorial reins will be debutant Simon McQuoid.
Marion has a serious RPG addiction. Sometimes it bleeds into real life; he forgets to sleep because he thinks he has a Witcher’s body clock. Forgive him in advance if he suddenly blurts out terms such as “Mind Flayer” and “Magic Missile”, because never once does he stop thinking about his next Dungeons & Dragons game.
