Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning releases tomorrow (13 July) and if you’re a big Mission: Impossible fan, you’ll want to catch it as soon as it hits the screen. Preferably in IMAX because in a week’s time, you won’t be able to.
Why? Well, you can blame it on the release of Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated Oppenheimer.
Both movies release in mid-July with Mission: Impossible releasing on 13 July and Oppenheimer on 20 July. So when the latter drops into theatres, it will take up all IMAX screens in the US for three weeks, leaving Cruise’s spy-action franchise with only a week in IMAX after opening.
Cruise was understandably unhappy (via Puck News) about the news but IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond has stepped forward with a solution that he thinks will appease the A-lister. Speaking with Variety, Gelfond suggests bringing back Mission: Impossible to IMAX once Oppenheimer finishes its run.
“I feel sad in a way we can’t accommodate all of them. I know Mission: Impossible is going to be a really big movie,” said Gelfond.
“Nolan has a special place in IMAX’s heart because he uses our cameras and promotes us. It’s not a matter of us saying which we can make more money on. I would hope after Oppenheimer’s’ run, we can bring back Mission.”
That said, there’s still no confirmation from either party on whether the movie will return to IMAX so the best thing for fans to do is to rush to theatres when they can. Doesn’t seem like that much of an impossible mission anyways.
