‘Marvel Snap’ Mobile Game Still Banned In US Despite Temporary TikTok Shutdown

Despite TikTok’s ban and subsequent restoration of services over the weekend, Nuverse’s mobile card game Marvel Snap has remained inaccessible for players in the United States.

TikTok officially went offline in the U.S. on 18 January, which subsequently led to the shutdown of other apps within its parent company ByteDance’s umbrella too, including video editing software CapCut, lifestyle content community Lemon8 and Marvel Snap. Despite the social media platform returning online one day later, it seems the same cannot be said for the mobile game.

Users in the U.S. are still being greeted with a message stating that they are unable to access it. “Sorry, Marvel Snap isn’t available right now, a law banning Marvel Snap has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use Marvel Snap for now. Rest assured, we’re working to restore our service in the U.S. Please stay tuned!” the message reads.

Marvel Snap was developed by Second Dinner and published by Nuverse, which is owned by ByteDance, thus explaining the ban. Second Dinner’s Chief Development Officer and Co-Founder Ben Brode discussed the ban on BlueSky, writing: “Unfortunately, Marvel Snap is temporarily unavailable in U.S. app stores and is unavailable to play in the U.S. This was a surprise to Second Dinner and our publisher Nuverse. We’re actively working on getting the game up as soon as possible and will update you once we have more to share.”

Despite its current state, developer Second Dinner has also taken to X/Twitter and provided its U.S. fans an update on the situation. “We’ve been working around the clock to bring Marvel Snap back up in the U.S. and hope to have it back online within 24 hours. We’ll update you once it’s back up.” it wrote, “In the meantime, global players should be able to continue to play with no issues.”

With the developer’s estimated timeframe, alongside TikTok resuming services in the U.S., Marvel Snap’s shutdown seems temporary, and fans in the U.S. should be able to return to the addictive Marvel-themed card battler sometime soon.
