‘Marvel Rivals’ Unveils Overwatch-Like Multiplayer PVP Shooter

If you’re a fan of Overwatch or Valorant, Marvel Rivals, Marvel and NetEase Games’ newest multiplayer player-vs-player (PVP) shooter might be right up your alley. The game was unveiled with a shiny trailer drop showing off snippets of gameplay, and teased an upcoming alpha test.

Grab your favourite Marvel heroes (or villains) and square off in intense 6v6 third-person battles. Players will explore iconic Marvel worlds and take on challenges, where familiar faces become newfound foes while former enemies become the greatest of allies.

Here’s the game’s synopsis:

The merciless clash between the tyrannical dictator Doctor Doom and his future counterpart from the year 2099 has forced countless universes to collide in the Timestream Entanglement, creating new worlds and crises still unknown. Now, heroes and villains from across the multiverse must fight together and against one another as disparate groups seek to defeat both Dooms before one achieves domination of these realities.

The game’s current roster includes Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Groot, Hulk, Iron Man, Loki, Luna Snow, Magik, Magneto. Mantis, Namor, Peni Parker, Rocket Raccoon, Scarlet Witch, Spider-Man, Storm, Star-Lord and The Punisher.

And the range looks interesting enough: a Japan-esque map was also teased, with Hulk and Iron Man at the scene. What’s unique about Marvel Rivals is that the environments are destructible, adding an element of strategy to gameplay.

It’s clear where Marvel Rivals takes its inspiration from: wildly popular multiplayer PVP shooter Overwatch. The similarities are striking between its Asgard map and the Numbani map, not to mention the overall design and the HUD, though the jury’s out until development is complete. Whether the game is able to shake off these comparisons is anyone’s guess, but we’ll get a closer look when the closed alpha tests begin in May which are now open for sign-ups on the game’s website.
