It’s another one in the bag for Keanu Reeves. A wearer of multiple hats, the Matrix star has no shortage of interests, from starting a band to founding a custom production motorcycle manufacturing company. Now, there’s another feat to add to the list – making his professional auto racing debut at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The actor put the pedal to the metal in the Toyota GR Cup on 5 October, ending up in 25th place (out of 33) in the amateur-focused racing series for car enthusiasts and aspiring racers. Around the halfway mark of the 45-minute race, he spun out onto the grass but re-entered the track after signalling that he was uninjured.
Reeves also avoided a first lap crash in Turn 14, and would go on to place 24th in Race 2 on 6 October. More notably, he was seen driving the No. 92 BRZRKR car, a nod to the graphic novel of the same name that he created. The first issue was released in 2020, with a live-action film adaptation and two-season anime series currently in the works at Netflix.
Previously, the 60-year-old took part and won the celebrity race in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, dishing out a reminder of his role in Speed. In it, he plays an LAPD officer tasked with preventing a city bus from exploding, triggered when its speed drops below 50 miles per hour (80 km/h). The film will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year, with American Cinematheque’s commemorative Q&A and screening reuniting him with co-star Sandra Bullock.
