James Dyson Award 2022 Is Searching For Singapore’s Next Big Ideas & Inventions

The James Dyson Award 2022 is calling on current and recent design engineering students to send in their big ideas and inventions. The best entries that solve a real-world problem not only get prize money, but Dyson will provide a platform to showcase their inventions and help get them to market. Entries close on 6 July 2022 and participation is free.

Past winners from Singapore include 2021’s international winner HOPES biomedical device for intraocular pressure testing, 2020’s KIMIA Rehab Kit wearable for knee replacement patients undergoing rehabilitation, and 2019’s Wheelson bicycle attachment to help with moving heavy loads.

Singapore winners for 2022 will receive a prize of S$9,000. All Singapore finalists can be chosen as one of the shortlisted 20 for a final judging by James Dyson himself, with the global winners getting a prize of up to S$54,000. Since its beginning in 2005, the James Dyson Award has awarded 285 inventions with prize money.

Entries should solve a real-world problem, are clearly explained, show iterative development, provide evidence of prototyping (if possible), and have supporting images and videos. Sustainable designs are preferred and stand a chance to win a sustainable award in the final judging round.

Interestingly, even products that are already on the market can take part in the award. The only requirement is that at least the team leader must be a current or recent (within the past 4 years) university student of engineering, product design and industrial design. So if you have an idea or product but aren’t studying design engineering, you can still take part if you have a teammate who is. Undergraduates and post-graduates are equally welcome.

Your inventions will remain yours and Dyson will not own any part of them other than the right to use them for publicity.

Interested inventors who want to get a leg up on bringing their ideas to life should head on to the James Dyson Award website now and submit their entries before 6 July 2022.
