James Cameron Working On New ‘Terminator’ Film, But Admits He Has Writer’s Block

Following a tease by Terminator director James Cameron last year that he was working on a secretive project, the filmmaker has now come forward to confirm that he is working on the script for the next movie in the sci-fi franchise, but admits that he has currently hit a snag.

This comes via a recent interview with CNN (as reported by Collider), where the 71-year-old stated that he was piecing together the script for the next Terminator project, but he was having some trouble finding the proper inspiration.

“I’ve been tasked with writing a new Terminator story,” Cameron explained, “I’ve been unable to get started on that very far because I don’t know what to say that won’t be overtaken by real events. We are living in a science fiction age right now.” He also added that it’s not just the Terminator franchise he was having issues with, but the genre as a whole, stating that he was “having a hard time writing science fiction right now.”

True to his word, the world today is far closer to the fictional reality made up within the Terminator movies due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) that is prevalent in many aspects of our daily lives, making the movie’s plot about an AI overlord, Skynet, becoming self-aware and taking over the world increasingly plausible as technology continues to advance.

Still, fans can rest easy and leave it up to Cameron’s visionary mind to dream up a sci-fi plot that can still surprise audiences. Although nothing is known about the plot of the new movie, the filmmaker has also previously hinted at his plans for the franchise via an interview with Empire late last year, where he revealed his plans to start the franchise afresh, jettisoning everything related to the last 40 years of Terminator and continuing the storyline without relying on its legacy characters.

Whether or not Cameron’s approach would work out remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure – he’ll be back.
