Jack Black Is Lara Croft, Link, Ryu, Kratos, And More In Brilliant Tenacious D Video Game Tribute MTV

Hot on the heels of “Peaches”, the Super Mario Bros. Movie earworm that took everyone by storm, Jack Black is not holding back on his love for video games. The actor-musician’s new song “Video Games”, released as part of his band Tenacious D’s discography, is a love letter to the craft that not only features some of the most iconic characters in history, but also turns him into Lara Croft, Link, Ryu, and Kratos, among others.

The music video opens with animated versions of Black, who belts out, “I don’t play video games no more, I never play video games,” and fellow actor Kyle Gass, strumming the guitar. After the latter gets crushed by God of War‘s Dauði Kaupmaðr, Black flees the scenes, only to find himself in the world of Fallout 4. The rest of the reel then turns the duo into Sonic and Tails, Red Dead Redemption cowboys, and more.

It’s full of infectious energy — not just for viewers, but for the Kung Fu Panda and Camp of Rock star himself as well, who commented on Twitter that the project was “a lot of fun” to create. “The time has come! We are pleased to share with you ‘Video Games’. We had a lot of fun creating this one. We hope you enjoy it too,” reads the post, which ends off with a string of related emojis.

Tenacious D is a comedy rock duo formed by Black and Gass that has amassed a sizable cult following over the years. “Peaches” and The Super Mario Bros Movie, however, have reminded mainstream audiences that Black can really hold his own in singing, so it’s no surprise “Video Games” turned out to be quite the banger — and also a likely manifestation of his hopes for a Red Dead Redemption movie.
