After a long and storied development cycle, Team Cherry’s Metroidvania sequel Hollow Knight: Silksong is finally on the horizon, and it’s not too long a wait either, as the game is set for release on 4 September 2025.
This comes from a two-minute-long trailer, which features a bunch of new gameplay footage, alongside the reveal that the sequel would be a fair bit larger than its 2017 predecessor at launch, featuring “over 200 ferocious foes” and “over 40 legendary bosses” (in comparison, the original game’s launch trailer advertised over 140 enemies and over 30 bosses).
While it might seem obvious that the sequel would be much larger than the original game, it has to be noted that Hollow Knight: Silksong didn’t start as a sequel, with original plans instead being for it to serve as DLC for the first game. According to an interview between Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier and Team Cherry, the latter explained how the game ballooned into a massive title too big for an expansion as the team added more locations, quests and characters to meet, which was also why the game took seven years to make, first being developed as an expansion in 2018 before officially being announced as a fully-fledge sequel in 2019.

Hollow Knight: Silksong’s release date announcement also coincides with an impressive sales milestone for the original game, with Team Cherry also revealing during the same interview with Bloomberg that Hollow Knight has officially sold 15 million units across the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC, a true feat for an indie title.
It’s unsurprising, then, that the sequel is getting so much hype, with Team Cherry going further to announce that it has plans to support Hollow Knight: Silksong with extra content post-launch. For now, at least, fans don’t have to wait much longer to get their hands on the game, as Hollow Knight: Silksong arrives on 4 September 2025 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
