Halle Berry Keen On Directing ‘Catwoman’ Sequel, Hits Back At Haters

It’s not often that a Hollywood actor wins both an Oscar and its satirical opposite, a Razzie, but Halle Berry proves otherwise. In 2005, the Catwoman lead became the first actress to accept a Razzie, otherwise known as the Golden Raspberry Awards, in person during the ceremony, winning the crowd over with a highly self-deprecating speech.

Still, the X-Men star has only spoken favourably about the 2004 film. Speaking to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Berry reiterated her love for the stint that bagged her the worst performance of the year while reflecting on its 20th anniversary.

“I loved it. It got panned. The critics said it sucked balls. And balls aren’t that bad,” she said. “What I’m happy about is that the children have found it now on the internet, and they love it. So, it’s so vindicating. Because now they’re saying it’s cool and what the heck was everybody’s problem with it.”

Berry also expressed an interest in reprising her role as Catwoman in case of a sequel, so long as she was at the helm. This comes after she first entertained the idea of a remake back in 2001, telling YouTube channel Jake’s Takes at the time:

“I would love to direct Catwoman. If I can get ahold of that now, knowing what I know, having had this experience [on Bruised], and reimagine that world the way I reimagined this story. Bruised was written for a white Irish Catholic 25-year-old girl, and I got to reimagine it. I wish I could go back and reimagine Catwoman and redo that. Have a redo on that, now knowing what I know.”

“I would have Catwoman saving the world like most male superheroes do, and not just saving women from their faces cracking off,” she added, referencing the film’s plot of pitting the titular hero against a corrupt beauty cosmetics company. “I would make the stakes a lot higher, and I think make it more inclusive of both men and women.”

The first directorial stint from the Oscar winner, Bruise was released in 2020 as a sports drama film on Netflix. In 2022, Zoe Kravitz starred opposite Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne as Catwoman in the The Batman.
