The King of the Monsters is back, and it has never looked more mad. As Legendary’s MonsterVerse continues the legacy with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Skull Island, the iconic kaiju is set to invade post-war Japan in Godzilla Minus One.
Minus one what? Minus one who? The announcement teaser gives no answers, but Toho promises the return of a Godzilla that is “a terrifying and overwhelming force”. According to the Japanese company, the movie will focus on post-war Japan dealing with a new and formidable rising threat. Takashi Yamazaki, known for his work on Always: Sunset on Third Street, Parasyte: Part 2, and Lupin III: The First, is serving as director and writer on the project.
Godzilla Minus One marks the first domestic Japanese Godzilla film since 2016’s Shin Godzilla. It will open in Japan on 3 November, just a year after being announced in November 2022, before hitting theatres in the U.S. on 1 December. Other details about the sci-fi title, including the whole synopsis and cast, are currently under wraps.
Since its first appearance on the big screen, Godzilla has grown to become a household name and cultural icon for the tokusatsu entertainment genre. The kaiju saw over 30 film releases over the past few decades, as well as various book, television series, and comic book iterations. Joining Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and the Skull Island anime in expanding the MonsterVerse mythology is the Apple TV+ series Godzilla and the Titans, which currently has no release date.
