George R. R. Martin Open To ‘Elden Ring’ Movie, But Only After His Next Book

A Game of Thrones writer George R. R. Martin has dropped his biggest tease yet on a potential Elden Ring movie but has admitted that he would focus on clearing a significant hurdle first – his next book, The Winds of Winter.

Speaking to IGN at their 2025 Fan Fest, Martin revealed that there was “some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring“, but any heavy involvement on his end would be hindered until he wraps up The Winds of Winter. “We’ll see if that [movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don’t know,” he said. “I’m a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do.”

The sixth entry in Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novels is certainly a great hurdle indeed, with the book infamously being a work in progress for over a decade and facing numerous delays, its previous entry being 2011’s A Dance With Dragons. Additionally, Martin previously admitted that he wasn’t sure if The Winds of Winter would ever be finished during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “[It’s] still a priority. A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me, [saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’” he stated, “Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!”

When it comes to Elden Ring, FromSoftware’s massive 2022 RPG hit, Martin also played a pivotal role in its development, working alongside the studio and its director Hidetaki Miyazaki on the game’s worldbuilding, with his involvement subsequently positioned as a major selling point in its promotional material.

This isn’t the first time Martin has teased the Elden Ring movie either, previously hinting towards its existence back in June 2024 via a post on his blog. FromSoftware’s Miyazaki also expressed his willingness to adapt the game while speaking to The Guardian in June 2024, although he admitted that it would be held off until “a very strong partner comes into play”. Until the day comes for the return of the pair’s legendary team-up, fans just have to jump back into the game and its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC to get their fix of the Lands Between.
