Geek Review: Redmagic 8 Pro Gaming Phone

Flagship smartphones have become more versatile over the years. Apart from day-to-day functionality, the criteria list for what makes a good pick now includes competency in other areas, such as mobile photography and playing mobile games. This all-rounded combination means high-end phones are presented as the convenient go-to option, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for niche devices.

The Redmagic 8 Pro is the latest gaming phone to join the list, and it’s set to blow all competition out of the water with its excellent prowess. Running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and a separate Red Core 2 dedicated gaming chip, the newest member of the family marries power with gaming-specific hardware that include dual shoulder triggers and a 520Hz touchpad.

More impressively, the Redmagic 8 Pro is equipped with in-built fans that can go up to 20,000 RPM (rotations per minute), bringing even more efficiency to an already robust cooling system. These features are accompanied by a 6.8-inch AMOLED display with FHD resolution (2480 x 1116), which work together to deliver high-speed performance and an optimal gaming experience.

Redmagic 8 Pro Review

Alas, a gaming phone can’t quite compare to the photography prowess of flagship models, with the camera on the Redmagic Pro 8 struggling to retain sharpness at 0.5x zoom and anything above 1x zoom. That shouldn’t be a deal breaker for gaming enthusiasts, though, as there are other perks to look forward to, such as a multi-dimensional cooling system, customisation for the air triggers, and an upgraded 6,000mAh battery with 65W super fast charging.

The Redmagic Pro 8 will be available in Matte (12GB RAM | 256GB storage) or Void (16GB RAM | 512GB storage) for the retail price of S$907 and S$1,119 respectively. Pre-orders are scheduled to go live on 2 February, but if you’re unsure whether to get one, our review video above breaks , and puts the phone through its paces with Genshin Impact, Apex Legends Mobile, Call of Duty: Mobile, and PUBG Mobile at the highest possible settings.
