Gamescom 2023: Indulge Your Adult Playground Fantasy With ‘Like A Dragon Gaiden’

The Yakuza/Like a Dragon games have never shied away from more mature themes, and at the same time, the series also packs plenty of humourous diversions and stylings to keep players entertained throughout the adventure. That signature pillar of gameplay is certainly part of the upcoming Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, as our preview at Gamescom 2023 proved.

Even as fans continue to be excited about the return of Kazuma Kiryu, there are still many loose ends to be tied up. Faking his death is one thing; it’s another to be stepping out of the shadows for one last job adopting a different name, this time as Joryu. While we were eager to find out just how this particular tale will unfold, the focus of the Gamescom demo centred on everything else, namely the fun side activities that players can get up to.

Stepping onto the container ship known as the Castle, the gates open up to a playground that can only be dreamt up by adults. A sprawling casino awaits, sitting nicely opposite a gambling hall with more traditional games. A boutique sees Joryu strutting his new threads like an aspiring model on a catwalk, while an arena full of combat challenges awaits the strong.

Yet, before players can get into the meat of this Like a Dragon Gaiden preview, a group of wannabe thugs decide to question the legitimacy of our hero’s presence in the area, which leads nicely to a showcase of the combat system in the game.

The impactful Yakuza style of fighting remains a strong favourite, with powerful blows being the name of the game. On the other hand, the Agent style sees the addition of four new gadgets to help Joryu deal with trouble effectively. Holding any of the face buttons will utilise the gadgets, which include jet-powered shoes, explosive cigarettes, combat drones, and wires used to ensnare groups of enemies.

Obviously, faced with this group of troublemakers, using the wires makes it easier in terms of crowd control, with the explosive cigarette being another useful tool to call upon. The instantaneous switch to Yakuza style to finish things up is just the cherry on top. The potential of the two styles working together should make for some fun combat scenarios in Like a Dragon Gaiden, and chances are, RGG Studios will be pushing the envelope as they have always done.

After clearing the hoodlums, it was time to dive headfirst into the other fun stuff. Nothing like earning big money at the blackjack or poker tables, or engaging in a game of Koi. There is also the game of darts for those who prefer a game of more apparent skill. There was also time for us to visit the nearby boutique, where we could dress Joryu up for combat and exploration, with plenty of hilarious and cool outfits to choose from. Full marks to the team for putting in a preview sequence that sees our boy striking unforgettable poses in whatever ridiculousness players put him in; there is simply nothing like this series out there.

For players seeking a more personal relationship, the Gamescom preview of Like a Dragon Gaiden also included the Cabaret, where Joryu could spend time with a live-action Kaname, striking up conversations and building up a meaningful relationship with the hostess. If the system is anything like what we have seen in the past, then count on the Cabaret being one of the most visited locations when the full game launches.

Just before our time was up, it was Coliseum time, where solo or team-based challenges lie in wait. Each encounter provided many avenues in which to master Joryu’s skills and move set, or any of the other fighters that players can choose from. Going up against dozens of enemies is also a fun way to test one’s skills, and all the money accrued doesn’t hurt as well.

Although it wasn’t the deep dive into the main narrative that we wanted, this sneak peek at the rest of what Like a Dragon Gaiden can offer is a nice tease nonetheless. There is always room for fun, even when the stakes are high, and we can’t wait to step into the shoes of Joryu once again this coming 8 November.
