Tencent Reportedly Planning ‘Elden Ring’ Free-To-Play Mobile Game

Rumors have been going around about an Elden Ring mobile game, after a Reuters report fueled speculation on the subject. According to sources close to the project, the game is in development at Tencent, though it might be a long wait due to the scale of such a project and China’s game censorship laws.

Unlike the main game’s hefty price tag, the mobile game is rumoured to be free-to-play with optional in-app purchases, much like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. Fans who support the game’s one-time payment model might be disgruntled to find out that content for the mobile version could be locked behind paywalls, though this is just speculation for now.

This isn’t Tencent’s first project with a big franchise — its latest mobile game game in Square Enix’s NieR franchise has been reportedly cancelled. The game had been in development for two years before it was axed, due to conflicts over its monetisation plans. FromSoftware, Elden Ring’s developer, is also behind the Dark Souls and King’s Field franchises, and while a collaboration with Tencent could bring both parties more profit, fans are cautious about getting their hopes up.

Meanwhile, its Shadow of The Erdtree expansion is likely arriving soon, though a release date has yet to be set.
